Engine Cylinder


An engine cylinder is the fundamental operational part of reciprocating engine. It is the space in which piston moves back and forth. In general multiple cylinders are arranged along side in a bank that is usually made up of cast iron or aluminum prior to machining of precision features. The engine cylinders are then lined with liners or sleeves of some wear resistant coating or harder metal. A displacement of engine cylinder which also referred to as swept volume. The square of the half the bore times pi is the cross-sectional area. This cross-sectional area multiplied with the total distance traveled by piston inside the cylinder gives the swept volume. The engine displacement is calculated by multiplying swept volume with total number of cylinders in the engine.

A piston is affixed within each engine cylinder with numerous metal piston rings. These piston rings get fitted around its outer surface edge in machined grooves. In general fine vapor of oil is retained suspended in the steam for proper functioning of the engine cylinders. The piston rings make closer contact with the rigid walls of the liner. A thin coating of lubricating oil is necessary for keeping the engine away from seizing up.

Due to closer contacts there can be some wear and tear. The resulting wear gives rise to the necessity of the hard lining on the inside surface edge of the engine cylinder. The process, due to which small abnormalities in metals get endorsed to develop congruent grooves, is called as running in or breaking in of an engine. The process of machining out the cylinders into slightly bigger diameters followed by installation of new piston rings and sleeves is called as re-bore or engine job.

The most fundamental piston engine configuration of an internal combustion engine is the single or 1 cylinder engine. This type of engine is often utilized in motorcycles. In addition to this they are extensively used in garden machinery and portable tools. Furthermore they are used in tractors and car as well.

1 cylinder engines are compact. Though simple they are capable to deliver the maximum possible power within a specified envelope. However these types of engines are not suitable for powerful and big type of applications. In addition to this 1 cylinder engine needs more flywheel effect as compared to multi-cylinder engines. Moreover the rotating mass in 1 cylinder engine is comparatively large. This restricts sharp variance of speed along with the acceleration. Cooling of 1 cylinder engine is much simpler to that of the multiple cylinders. That is why they are potential to save weight.
